DAY 17
Our last full day on the river. People are exhausted, tempers flare, and attitudes are tested. The river is brown, hot and monotonous. Carlin got grounded in a mud bank, had to
get out of the raft and push it along. Not much to see except the dust-devils ripping along the eroded sandy banks on either side of us. Then we come across what is the very last
attraction along this journey...a creek bed where some engineers built crude steps leading to a pocket of trees in a canyon, maybe only 1/2 mile in...with the last waterfall, a
trough of water running down from the sparkling sunlight above. We all get wet and take turns sitting in the trough, splashing and cooling off in several ways. The evening
brought us to within 2 miles of our take-out point, at Pearce Landing. The wind was so vicious that we decided to skip setting up the kitchen and cooking dinner. Instead, we raided
the rafts' coolers for any food that hadn't spoiled yet and ate together until dark, while watching a desert brush fire sweep across the canyon beyond ours. Three of us slept on rafts.
