DAY 3

We woke up today recognizing that our leisurely vacation was going to be more arduous than thought...more like an athletic event or survival course. Our attitudes were serious.
MaryAnn woke up in more pain than the previous day, so it was decided to call a helicopter to lift her out. Charlie hiked off to find a satellite phone signal and called in the injury.
We scouted a flat spot for the helicopter to land, and by mid-morning MaryAnn was with the paramedics on her way to Flagstaff hospital. I still had most of her gear on my raft.
Existing in the Arizona desert can be harsh and challenging, even without summer heat and a daily regimen of miles to conquer by raft...and now we are behind schedule too.
Then we turn the corner and come across "The Cave", one of the Grand Canyon's more photogenic attractions. Some lunch, some more canyon, small rapids, then a nice camp.
