In creating the underground city for The Seven Blessings book, I was looking for a timeless style of architecture; not Byzantine, not Victorian, not Aztec...but rather feeling as if it were a cousin of those grand cultures.
Here are the hanging lamps that illuminate the underground city…
And here are some of my steps in building the underground city itself, starting with the basic shapes…
And then adding more texture, lighting, flags and statues…
I enjoy architectural detailing, as you can see from these non-corinthian and non-ionic column capitals I created…
Putting these props together, and using just the wings of a character for comparison of the look, I rendered various interior angles…
And then I tried some illustrative styles to see what might look good inside the black-and-white pages of the book…
